I'd lost track of this story. So it was you who wrote it! Such a neat way of shoehorning in both canonical fathers.

And poor Celebdil--so memorable that she gets overlooked even by the people who are looking straight at her--and even Fingon doesn't remember her name! At least Orodreth doesn't seem likely to forget who she is!

I had not spotted this before...  So in your 'verse Erestor is Maedhros's foster son? You describe his nostalgia and passionate longing for those he has lost so powerfully!

It is true that, if Boromir succumbed to his desire to restore Gondor to its ancient splendour, the temptation for Elves like him and Glorfindel who had seen the First Age to try and turn back the wheel of time with the power of the Ring must have been very strong indeed!

Author's Response:

How lovely to get a review from you, Himring. I feel a bit overawed and uncertain that the Maedhros master is reading this...it's not really something I have worked on very much but is really outtakes from my other fics.

I had thought that Maedhros likely to have accepted waifs and strays into his household- but not quite fostered in the same way that Maglor fostered Elrond and Elros- nothing as close as that. More in the line of pages in the medieval times, where a knight would have almost had an apprentice in his page. My 'verse' (although that gives it too much credit to be honest)- is far more along those sorts of lines as Erestor's feelings about Maedhros are, I think, more devoted admiration than filial. What I am really pleased about is that you think his longing for those he has lost comes across powerfully- with the Ring, I have always felt Tolkien focuses on Boromir and Frodo to the extent that the others are a bit lost. It would have worked on those most powerful and most likely to be able to do something with it, I felt. So Gandalf is very vulneralbe, as are Elrond and Galadriel - it must have appealed ot Glorfindel next and Erestor. It's also to show that (in my fics) it sows discord so in my current fic, Legolas and Giml iget on wiute well until they leave for the Quest.

I'm very chuffed you have read this- thank you, but it isnt polished in any way. Having said that, where the current ficis going sort of requires me to take this story and add to it now so I'll probalby go back and sor tout all the typos and discrepancies. Going off to read your other piece now and get inspired.

Title: Elegy for Númenor by elfscribe
Rated: Mature [Reviews - 9]
Summary: Feature

The Númenórean King Ar-Pharazôn thinks he has won an easy victory when Sauron surrenders to him and becomes his prisoner. But the march back to Umbar with the conniving Dark Lord turns out to have many unanticipated twists and turns through a nest of politics and intrigue, including Sauron's attempted seduction of Ar-Pharazôn's favorite male courtesan.

This is volume I of a planned trilogy. An epic tale of political intrigue, the desire for immortality and love, sorcery, hubris, loyalty, lust, and catastropic amounts of water.

Ah, that evokes fond memories! It's wonderful to hear you are working on Volume 2.

You're doing minor tweaks to these chapters, you say. Are you updating the SWG text as well?

Author's Response:

Hi Himring.  Nice to see you here.  Yes, updating SWG as well.  As you know, in these WIPs when we post as we go along often there are inconsistencies from the early chapters.  In the case of Chapter 1, the whole logistics discussion required a tweak so that it was the Haradrim not the Easterlings that wouldn't send armies to support Sauron.  That makes his betrayal of them later on more understandable.  Plus, there's little things.  Chapter 4 has some tweaks to Tigon's first appearance.   As far as Volume 2, well, I skipped over the first chapters I need to write and I've written the introduction to two new characters.  I hoping to get back into it in the Season of Writing Dangerously.  We'll see.  Thanks for commenting. Hugs!

Poor Mandos!

Irmo may have an easier job of it than the others trying to run the Halls, but I don't think Namo will make an easy patient. And maybe all the other Valar will soon need therapy as well--except, I suppose, Tulkas!

Author's Response: Ah yes, Namo is not going to be an easy patient... And it's very possible indeed that Irmo and his wife will have a very full schedule when this is over... Tulkas counters any form of insanity with AWESOMENESS! xD In the end, he might just be the sanest one of the whole bunch...

Yay for Aiwendil's baking skills! Maybe Nienna won't even need that much therapy after she's slept it off.

I guess Irmo should meet Luthien at some point? After all, she's supposed to be the only one who made a really big impression on Namo. But it might be too early in the game?

That's a neatly distorted reflection of the Silmarils in Namo's mind, which like all such things holds quite a measure of truth--and the song is appropriately cheery and gruesome at the same time (kudos to your sister!).

Author's Response: I just couldn't help but think of the silmarils as creepy little girls, a bit like ghost kids in horror movies... Thanks a lot for reviewing, and I'll tell my sister you appreciated her input! ;)

Yeah, it's really about time, isn't it? xD

Don't worry, Irmo is well on the way to find his brother's lost sanity, the Fëanorians won't have to suffer much longer...
