Aaaaaaaaaaaaaw that's cute. I liked that Maedhros is actually the one to take care of the cat, which is the proof that no one can resist them, including battle-hardened Fëanorian. And the metaphor of cloak/hug is very nice! Did Fingon put a spell or something like that on the cloak, or is it just poetic feelings on Maedhros' end?
Thank you Kalendeer:) Who can resist a cute little cat? As you say, certainly not Meadhors Feanorian! So glad you liked the cloak- I hadn't thought of Fingon putting magic into it but that's a nice thought.
I liked this a lot, ziggy!!
The arrival of Nármöfinion and the relationship between him and Maedhros, the wrapped gift he brings and Maedhros's thoughts as he unwraps the gift, his hopes for the success of the Alliance...
So sad that the hopes are in vain, but the scene is lovely.
(I also appreciated that bit about the cat!)
From the Mistress of Silmfic herself this is a huge compliment! I am ridiculously pleased that you liked it and reviewed. Hah- you have cats obviously :)Thank you.
Most things have been done, but not by *you*. And a lot depends on the writer; and you’re a fantastic writer!
Oh. You're making me blush :) Thank you.
Oh, I’m sorry, Ziggy— I know shoulder injuries can take a lot of work — and physi, it can be a complicated injury. (Hugs)
Writing in the First Age is a bit...addictive ;) I am looking forward to it!
It'll heal -I hope just not as quickly as I'd like. Thank you.
Yes- I am quite excited- it's finding something that other people haven't done to death though...
You’re going to write in Beleriand? YESSS! I am so here for that!
By the way, how is your leg doing?
I've been surprised by how much attention this has got overall the sites I publish on and just think I've cleared some space in my head- having resolved Legolas and Elrohir happily! And I am so inspired by your writing that I want a go too!!!
Knee is fine- half way through the recovery so that's doing quite well but I have injured my shouder in th same fall and that is not doing well. But no one has looked at that- I am waiting for a referral and hoping they don't need to operate. Bleh- horrible to be injured!! I am like the elves we write about- desperate to get back to normal!!
Oh my gosh! The descriptions were so beautiful. I could actually feel the cold and imagine everything Maedhros was seeing.
His yearning to be with Fingon and his dreams of the future that will never be. So sad.
Wonderful story, Ziggy.
thank you Gabriel- glad you enjoyd this. I agree, I think Meadhos is the most tragic character in the whole of Tolkien. He's about to make an appearance in Where the Shadows Lie and it's not going to be happy there either:(
posting my ao3 comments here because this one shot deserves all the love in the world.
oh Ziggy! Thank you SO MUCH for this. What a wonderful one shot. I loved this Maedhros point of view, the thoughts he keeps to himself, the cold and isolation surrounding him and how his thoughts go to Fingon and how those thoughts warm him just enough. The descriptions of the cold, of Himring, of Narmo--rich and detailed.
I love the idea of the gift wrapping and ribbons-ribbons so innately tied to Fingon himself. The way Maedhros asks if Fingon wrapped it himself--my heart! At the thought of Fingon taking the care to do it himself and how Maedhros takes it as a way to touch his hands to something his beloved had touched, not long ago. Such yearning and love in that imagery--for both of them. And the sensation of pulling the ribbon likened to Fingon's hair ribbons--so sensual, romantic, viscerally affecting.
And the cloak! the paragraph about the cloak, the feel of Fingon in its folds, in the way it enveloped him, caressed him, held him. Omg Ziggy the imagery in this was so brilliant. I loved how you made the package, the ribbon, the cloak all echo the sensation of that other person so distinctly.
thank you so much, my dear. It is treasured. I've missed these boys.
thank you for giving me this lovely moment with them.
Now I'm crying thinking of Maedhros having this cloak with him at the battle. Keeping it through the years, until its threadbare and faded. But it's from Fingon so he can't let it go.
Thank you for posting this here, Nelya- so glad you liked it. :)
Aww, this was beautiful, but so sad, as we know how the Union Of Maedhros will end — with Unnumbered Tears, and I just can’t bear it.
I wonder if he kept the cloak with him, after...*sobs*
He would have kept that cloak until the very end, don't you think? Would have wrapped it around Elros, pulled it round him. sniff. I'm going to play around in Beleriand after WTSL is done.
