I almost missed this, Nelya! Sorry about that.
Findekano and Maitimo watching each other and then glancing away. Could they be any more obvious. They are adorable. And all that longing...
Loved the idea that Feanor stumbled across fruit ice. I like it when people come up with new inventions and attribute it to Feanor.
But the family dinner. Loved that Finwe had noticed the two of them snatching looks at each other and had figured out some time ago his grandsons were in love, but neither knowing the other felt the same. Awwww!!! So beautiful!
*Maitimo and Findekano's hearts were meant to be together. Their souls called out to each other. It was cruel to let them both be stifled by convention and the imposed morality of those who could not understand.*
Its always lovely to read about these two and their forbidden love and you do such a wonderful job with it. :)
Author's Response: Thanks Gabriel! I'm glad you found this! Pining FInno and Mae are so adorable. One of my favorite things to write.
I think people overlook the fact that Feanor probably came up with hundreds of practical ideas for the Noldor. Day to day things to make his (and their) lives easier.
Finwe really came out of nowhere to take on an important role in this fic and one I am likely to come back to explore further. Thanks so much for your comments--so encouraging and gratifying that I succeeded at what I set out to do with this fic!
Oh what a wonderful New Year to have this fabulous, subtle, affectionate and tender love story to read. I love the reference to the ice and how Finno hates the cold (great bit of irony/foreshadowing), and the little looks, the way they keep looking at each other. But Finwë's resolve to speak to them is really superb story-telling- so there is a little bit of conflict being sown, a plot (I hope because I really really hope you continue this) and I love the way it builds the relationships with other characters.
Wonderful writing, Nelya.
Author's Response: Thank you so much Ziggy, for this and all those superlatives! Yes the ice reference was intentional and definitely foreshadowing. I imagine they spent quite a bit of time darting glances at each other and looking away, the romantic saps. Finwe just insinuated himself into the narrative but I'm so glad he did. They need him on their side. I really would like to continue in this universe. I started with it in the story within the story in What is Lost and I"ve been searching for a way to get back to this time period ever since I wrote that fic!
This is so gorgeous! Maedhros/Fingon pining is one of my favourite things to read, as is Maitimo tutoring young Findekáno.
Heee, Fëanor invented sorbet! Amazing!
I love how you write both their characters - Maitimo being patient, eloquent, almost frighteningly intelligent, working too hard and not focussing enough on himself - and Findekáno is just irrepressible, and so kind-hearted, and a tiny bit shy. I really like the hints at the wider family dynamics, too - especially the hints of Finwë's past, that was really touching.
You write this pairing so wonderfully.
Happy New Year!
Author's Response: thanks so much, Narya! Maehros/Fingon pining is one of my favorite things also. To read and write! And the tutoring as well. I"ve ben trying to find a way to get back to the story within the story of What is Lost and this was the way. Now that I'm here with them again I am thinking of more moments to write about. I hope that pans out and I get it done.
Feanor the creator of the ice box and frozen treats!! There is no way this brilliant Elf concerned himself only with jewels and smith work! He was far too creative and also far too egalitarian. I see him as someone who did his own work, cooking, cleaning, all of that. He would certainly find ways to make things easier so that he and Nerdanel could spend more time creating! Iced treats were just a happy byproduct!
I'm glad you like my characterizations. I have a very definite idea of them both. They're both brilliant but in different ways. They are both charismatic but again in different ways. Finwe surprised me by appearing here but I am so glad he did. He was a welcome addition. And an ally these boys need.
Your words are so encouraging and make me feel I've done right by these two!
