I read about Christopher Tolkien's death a couple of days ago. He lived to a ripe old age. Like King Théoden, of the cup of life he enjoyed a full measure.

Reviews For The Governess

Name: Naledi (Signed) · Date: September 04, 2018 17:49 · For: Of History... and arithmetic.

“They could probably sell Uncle Legolas all sorts of things for the wrong price,” Eldarion said, “as he is not very good at sums. He has to keep asking me to help…”

That made me laugh out loud. But the ending was so poignant. Reminded me why I prefer writing about elves!

Author's Response:

Laughing out loud is good!  I tend to agree with you about the elves, although they have their own sadnesses.

If Firiel has managed to deal with the constant 'whys' without resorting to 'because I say so' she deserves a medal! I'm loving these :)

Author's Response:

I always feel she is young enough to remember getting that answer more than she liked, as a child, and does her best not to say it.  But I guess it will slip out sometimes :)

Lovely! I think Firiel is learning more than Eldarion at times :)

Author's Response:

Thank you - I think you are quite right!

Such lovely moments and memories!

Author's Response:

Thank you.  I am really pleased that you enjoyed it.

“They could probably sell Uncle Legolas all sorts of things for the wrong price,” Eldarion said, “as he is not very good at sums. He has to keep asking me to help…”

Lovely and then the sad little epilogue- that is not entirely sad but really poignant and truthful and rather lovely. IYou made me feel for Eldarion- he loses so many at his father's death; both parents, and his beloved Uncles. And then Firiel- who is the most delightful OC- as are all your OCs actually.

Author's Response:

I'm so glad you liked that line - I remember it made me smile when it occurred to me!

Yes - Eldarion had been well tutored by his parnts, to tak on the kingship, but even so he must have felt rather lonely sometimes, at least at first.

I like to think Firiel remained to be governess to all the royal children, unless she married a nice young guardsman of course!

haha! Love this bit:

Firiel realised, just too late, what was coming…

“Dragons would like Uncle Gimli’s caves!”

and Firiel's smugness as Celebron is caught out as well with :

Firiel smiled slightly as Eldarion interrupted; the inevitable question was bound to follow.

You have caught that unending curiosity and unfuriating constant questioning by choldren beautifully. And Aragorn's sneakypeak of her with Eldarion is a really nice touch.

Author's Response:

For the first few months she was very much on trial; Faramir had suggested her, but you can imagine a lot of advisors wanting someone older and more experienced; Aragorn probablt peeked in a few times without being noticed!   Arwen would probably have been pleased to know Celeborn approved of thir choice, I think.

Oh this is just charming. I love the slow development of the governess and her gradual affection fo her charge, her developing patience and understnading that she is investing her time and love in him- that his questions are NOT to be ground down. And especially her gradual acceptance of our lovely Legolas:)

This bit made me smile:

Uncle Pippin says that willows can be really bad tempered and ‘out to get people’.  But Uncle Legolas says that they need listening to, and understanding, and love; and then they’ll be happy and nice to you.”

His governess considered the fey creature that was Uncle Legolas.

‘Yes…’ she thought, ‘…he would.’

But later, she understands his kindness.

Author's Response:

Thank you.  I think. looking back, that Firiel learn a lot about elves!  She was chosn because she was young and, therefore, open-minded, I think!
