It is the mark of a good fairy-story, of the higher or more complete kind, that however wild its events, however fantastic or terrible the adventures, it can give to child or man that hears it, when the “turn” comes, a catch of the breath, a beat and lifting of the heart, near to (or indeed accompanied by) tears, as keen as that given by any form of literary art, and having a peculiar quality ... In such stories when the sudden “turn” comes we get a piercing glimpse of joy, and heart's desire, that for a moment passes outside the frame, rends indeed the very web of story, and lets a gleam come through.
Tolkien Secret Santa
Hello all, well it is coming to that time of year again and if anyone is on Tumblr, the Secret Santa is a very low level exchange you may want to check out.
- November 1st: Sign-ups are open
Please click here for instructions on joining as well as the signup form.
- November 27th: Sign-ups close
Sign-ups close at 11:59PM GMT. You can check that in your timezone here.
- November 30th: Assignments sent out
This will begin on the morning of the 30th; assignments will be sent out by 11:59PM GMT on December 1st.
- December 14th: Anonymous gift posting + Last call for dropouts
From today, you can start posting your gifts anonymously. If you really cannot make the deadline, December 14th is the absolute last day for you to drop out so our pinch-hitters have enough time to make something for your giftee.
- December 24th: Gifts reveal
Tag your giftee! All gifts posted after today should be tagged with your giftee’s URL, this blog’s URL (@officialtolkiensecretsanta), as well as the hashtag #tolkiensecretsanta2018. Gifts will begin to be reblogged by Boxing Day. Be sure to let us know if you explicitly do not want your gift to be reblogged.
- How do I post my gift?
Starting December 14th, you can begin to anonymously post your gifts. “Anonymously” means that you post your gift on your blog, without adding your giftees name (@userxy) if it is before the 24th. At this stage, just include the hashtag #tolkiensecretsanta2018 and our URL, @officialtolkiensecretsanta. Then, for the big reveal on December 24th, simply reblog your post tagging your giftee and including, again, the hashtag #tolkiensecretsanta2018. Easy as blinking!
- How long should fics be?
There is no official minimum or maximum for length of fic. However, we recommend a minimum of 300 and a maximum of 1200. The goal is ultimately quality rather than quantity, but we want the gift to have some substance as well as not being too unwieldy.
- What if I’m making something by hand?
This is a digital gift exchange, so your best bet is to take a high-quality photograph or scan of your piece and post that for your giftee.
- What if the gift is audio?
If you’re making a playlist, you’re advised to create it using YouTube or Spotify. This is because 8tracks, for all intents and purposes, has cut off streaming outside the US and Canada. Creating a YouTube or Spotify playlist will allow your gift to reach your giftee wherever they are, and will let others tune in as well once it’s reblogged to our blog!
- What if I need to give my gift early?
If you need to give your gift early for whatever reason, there are two things you can do to be part of the big reveal on the 24th. You can post your gift early - anonymously - and we will reblog it on the day, tagging your giftee on your behalf. Alternatively, you can schedule a post for the 24th with your giftee mentioned. Be sure to tag #tolkiensecretsanta2018 so we can reblog it!
- I’m in X timezone, how do I make sure I give the gift in good time?
As wonderful as it is to have participants worldwide, it does pose a bit of a headache for gift-giving - you don’t want the surprise to be ruined early, after all! It’s advised you post your gift around 11am (GMT), as this will still be the last hours of the 24th in Auckland (our marker for the east) and it will be the very beginning of the 24th in Anchorage (our marker for the west). It may be uncomfortable to work out timing, so we advise scheduling your post. Alternatively, you can message the blog (with your giftee’s URL please) and we can find out their timezone for you.
- What if my gift will be late?
If you are giving the gift late, please message this blog with the URL/email of your giftee and how delayed you will be, so we can follow up.You’re also encouraged to send your giftee an ask on anon so they can know about the delay directly from you. Again, be sure to tag #tolkiensecretsanta2018 when the gift is finally posted so it can be reblogged.
- What if I’m not sure I can commit to the gift exchange?
Many participants have said that the anticipation of getting a gift, and ultimately receiving something wonderful, is one of their favourite aspects of the event. Therefore, nothing is more disappointing than not receiving a gift when you thought you would. You must be quite certain of your commitment before you sign up - remember, this closes on November 27th, just before midnight (GMT). If you really, truly cannot make a gift in time, it’s your responsibility to message the blog by December 14th so a pinch-hitter can be found for your giftee.
This gift is exchange is an entirely volunteer-run event. If you’re enjoying it, do consider sending a message to @fernstrike (mod fern), @feanope (mod fea), @moringottos (mod m), and @raisingcain-onceagain (mod rc)! We absolutely love hearing how much fun you guys have participating :)

Rules & FAQ
By popular demand, we will reveal to you the name of your recipient at your request. Some people find it easier to write or to personalize a story if they know the identity of their recipient. Other people find that thought absolutely horrifying! Now, you can have it either way. If, at any time during the writing period, you wish to know the identity of your recipient, you may ask us. Since other writers do not want to be "spoiled," we ask that you please keep this information to yourself!
PROHIBITIONS / RESTRICTIONS
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Can I ask for femslash?
Yes! We had our first femslash stories during the 2013 My Slashy Valentine swap, and we'd love to have you join us.
Q: I see a main focus on Elves, Men, Valar and Maiar. What about Dwarves and Hobbits?
A: In previous swaps there was less emphasis on Dwarves and Hobbits, but due to the release of the Hobbit movies, that's starting to change. We're happy to try and accommodate any request, though it is dependent on having writers able to fill these requests. You can help this process by spreading the word to your fellow Dwarf and Hobbit writers.
Q: I just received my assignment and it fits perfectly into part of a series I've been working on. Can I use it anyway?
A: We'd prefer your story to be original and created solely for your recipient, but so long as your submission fits the assignment you received, can be read and understood as a standalone, and it's new and unreleased, then go ahead.
Q: Yikes! I've been working on my story, but there was a family emergency and I don't think I'll make the deadline. What should I do?
A: Let us know! The Slashy Swap team have families too and understand that emergencies sometimes happen. The sooner you tell us, the easier it will be for us to come to a mutually agreeable solution.
Q: Unfortunately, the emergency has turned into something longer term and I won't be able to finish my story after all.
A: Again, please let us know as soon as possible so we can find a replacement to finish your assignment.
Q: I signed up for the previous exchanges, but never turned anything in. Can I still participate?
A: No. It simply isn't fair to those who met their obligations, or to the person who didn't get a story. If it was under special circumstances, reach out to the mods and we will review your case.
Q: Do I need to have my work beta read? I don't have one!
A: While we will not strictly enforce the use of a beta, we strongly encourage it. At the very least, please proof read and run a spell and grammar check. If you need help finding a beta, let us know and we'll direct you to some beta resources. Remember, you're writing a gift for someone, so make your story as perfect as it can be.
Q: HELP! I received the worst assignment in the world! What were you thinking? I can't write this!
A: It was likely an oversight. Please contact us and we will do what we can to find another assignment that is more to your taste and ability. If you already confirmed you would accept it, we can't make promises, but we'll do the best we can to help.
NOTE: In some rare instances, it may not be possible for a request to be filled to the requestor's exact specifications. This may occur if no author is willing to write the elements in the request (some examples are BDSM, fetish, rape, MPREG, or character death). In this case, the participant will be asked to revise their request so that we'll be able to match it.

Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang 2018Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang 2018
What is it?
No, but, Raiy, what is it specifically?
A Reverse Bang is a type of Big Bang event in which artists submit art prompts (up to 3 total, though each prompt can be more than one image/visual artwork). The art prompts are then claimed by writers who will write a piece of fiction based on the prompt chosen.
Big Bang? Wait, are you going to make me write a novel, Narya?!
No, minimum word count is set at 5000 words.
But I don’t have time!
That’s alright, we need cheerleaders, too ;)

July 5, 2018: Check In. We will be asking how your collaboration is progressing and whether you are on track to finish by the deadline.
